Different Ways to Thank Your Employees

Your employees really are your biggest and most valuable asset. When was the last time you thanked them for all their hard work?

You don’t have to be a Fortune 500 company to come up with innovative, cost-effective ways to call attention to your star performers. Many of the best ways aren’t nearly as expensive as you might think. Here are a few ideas to get your mind turning on the subject:

The Simple “Goody Bag”

For this one to have maximum impact, you need to know something about your employees’ tastes and preferences. Once you do, this is as simple as filling a bag full of candy or other sweet treats, catering to each employee’s tastes and preferences, along with a handwritten note thanking them for all they do for you. It’s a small thing, but it can have an amazing impact!

Treat Them With An Unexpected Perk And/Or Award

Unlike the goody bag, this one is (or can be) a bit more expensive. If you’re on a budget and need to keep costs low, starting an employee of the month competition and awarding the winner with a premium parking spot is a great way to get the ball rolling.

This one works best if you allow the employees to nominate each other and post the nominees and the winners on the company bulletin board. This approach not only shows that you’re paying attention to what the employees think of each other and take their opinions seriously, but it also encourages a broader base of participation.

Of course, if your budget will allow it, the ultimate expression of gratitude here is to give the winner an extra day or half day off. Not every business can afford to do this, but if you can, there are few things that would garner greater appreciation. If not, perhaps consider allowing the winner in each period a greater degree of flexibility in setting their own work hours. While not quite as impactful as granting them an extra day off, it’s a fine reward by any reckoning.

A Catered Lunch

Sometimes, the simplest approach is best. This one is ideal if you want to recognize a particular team or your company as a whole and doesn’t need to be extravagant. Just something that shows you care and appreciate their contributions.

What About A “Face Mural?”

This is a great way to recognize a true “Rock Star” in your organization and has a wonderfully artistic flair. To do it, simply use the face pictures of your other employees, arranged in such a way that they create a likeness of the employee you want to recognize. You can leave this mural up until it’s time to pick the next winner. It’s a fun, creative way to show your appreciation.

The bottom line is simply this: Happy employees are more productive employees. Recognition is one of the keys to improving morale, and giving that recognition doesn’t have to break the bank!
