National Employee Appreciation Day is March 4<\/a>, and it\u2019s always a fantastic opportunity to show your hard-working employees some love and recognition, but the simple truth is that recognition isn\u2019t a one-off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why give employee awards & recognition?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not something that the most successful companies confine to a fixed point in time and then forget about for the rest of the year.  There are a number of compelling reasons why, but as a review, here are the big three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Productivity Gains<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Multiple studies have been conducted on the impacts of regular employee recognition<\/a>.  One of the biggest benefits to you, as the owner of the firm is the fact that by taking the time to recognize your employees and calling attention to the achievements of your star performance is that they\u2019ll work harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes intuitive sense, but the numbers may surprise\nyou.  A well-run employee recognition\nprogram will boost the productivity of your employees by an average of 12%\nwhich is beyond impressive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appreciation Is The Foundation Of Trust<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The reason human beings are the dominant life forms on\nplanet earth today comes down to one fact: \nWe work well together.  We\ncooperate with each other.  We trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But trust doesn\u2019t happen automatically.  It\u2019s best when it\u2019s built on a solid\nfoundation and that foundation starts with appreciation.  If your employees know, and get regular\nreminders that you appreciate their efforts, they\u2019ll reward you with greater\ntrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studies have borne this out as well.  Surveys conducted at companies that have a\nrobust employee recognition programs consistently report that upwards of 90% of\nemployees trust their managers.  Contrast\nthat with only 48% at companies without such programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improved Employee Retention Rates<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the #1 reason\nemployees switch jobs has to do with the fact that they feel they lack autonomy\nand respect.  An employee recognition\nprogram tends to encourage greater autonomy and is a tangible sign of\nrespect.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you looked at the numbers surrounding finding, hiring\nand training a new employee?  On average,\nit costs more than $4,000 and takes up to 42 days of training to get a new hire\nup to speed.  That\u2019s 42 days of minimal\nproductivity on top of the direct costs. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s staggering, and given that, it only makes sense to do\neverything you can to keep your employees happy, productive and working for\nyou.  The more you can do that, the less\noften you\u2019ll have to bear the expense of hiring someone new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that to say, if you don\u2019t currently have an employee recognition program in place, you\u2019re leaving money on the table.  You owe it to yourself and your employees to develop one right away so both you and they can start reaping the many benefits it will bring to your company and you\u2019ll be delighted at the positive changes it has on your company\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
