Incentive programs can be a great boon for your\ncompany, improving employee engagement, performance, and retention. However,\nachieving these results can be a challenge and requires a well-designed program\nwith clear measures of success and rewards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider Your\nOrganization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An incentive program may look much different for a new\nstart-up than for an older business. What are the specific metrics that you\nwish to reward, and how do employees demonstrate them? How is the program\ntracked? If rewards feel arbitrary, it can cause frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determine a reasonable budget and include all\nemployees in the program. Encourage teamwork, and also a healthy dose of\ngood-natured competition with the right balance of team-based and individual\nrewards. Giving out smaller, affordable prizes such as office\nposters<\/a> may keep morale better than a single, big prize at the end\nof the program, whether it\u2019s every year, quarter, or month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Define Success<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What defines success for your program? It should be challenging\nbut realistic and attainable. If the goals are too easy and prizes are given\nout too often, it can devalue the program at the cost of trying to keep\neveryone happy but instead being overly generous. With that said, small\nvictories should be celebrated to keep employees on the right track, keeping\nthem motivated and inspired to do their best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next puzzle piece to a successful incentive program is choosing rewards. Smaller\u00a0thank you gifts for employee appreciation<\/a>\u00a0can be easier to manage than one large reward, but larger rewards as part of a longer-running program can be a great additional incentive. What will your employees want? Do they want something like a highlighter set or a tumbler for their morning coffee? A notebook or a stack of sticky notes?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key to choosing appropriate rewards is\nunderstanding the culture and the employees themselves. Some may want a\nteamwork sculpture they can admire during a brain break at their desks, while\nothers might prefer a company-branded mug or T-shirt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measure Progress and\nRefine the Program<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once the program\u2019s goals are outlined and there\u2019s a\ngood idea of what kinds of rewards are appropriate, it\u2019s time to kick off the\nprogram. Once it\u2019s in motion, continually monitor progress. You will be able to\nsee what is working and what is not in the program and adjust\naccordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the raffle system based on managers recognizing\nemployees is not working, for example, switch to a different incentive system\nor refine within the system. What deserves a ticket, and what does not? If the\ngoals are still not clearly defined, they may need to be revised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another critical part of a successful program is\ncommunication. This includes informing employees of the program\u2019s goals and\nrewards, and when monitoring the program, letting them know what is working and\nwhat is not. Then, tell them who won, and what the next steps of the program\nare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
