{"id":5092,"date":"2020-02-25T05:00:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T10:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.successories.com\/blog\/?p=5092"},"modified":"2022-02-17T18:30:16","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T23:30:16","slug":"the-power-of-praise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.successories.com\/blog\/the-power-of-praise\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Recognition in the Workplace and the Manager&#8217;s Role"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Here are some statistics that may surprise you.&nbsp; Nearly half of all managers say their own\nanxiety increases when they have to give negative feedback to an employee that\nreports to them, which causes them to either delay giving the feedback, or\nsimply not give it at all.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">On top of that, fully 40% of managers surveyed say they\nnever give positive reinforcement, either.&nbsp;\nThose are staggering statistics, especially when you consider that a\nsignificant percentage of managers report that they really have no clear idea what\nit is that motivates their employees and how to improve that.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">If you\u2019ve been wondering the same thing, this article is for\nyou, and given the title of this piece, it will probably not come as a great\nshock to learn that praise, or positive feedback, plays a major role.&nbsp; The question is:&nbsp; How major?&nbsp;\nJust how important is positive feedback?&nbsp;\nThe answer might surprise you as much as the other statistics we\u2019ve\nmentioned so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employees derive fully 70% of their engagement from their managers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This is something for which we have a lot of very good, very\nprecise data because over the years, there has been a tremendous amount of\nresearch done on the topic.&nbsp; It turns out\nthat employees derive fully 70% of their engagement from their managers and a\nbig portion of that stems from the positive feedback they get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Understand, however, that not all positive feedback is\ncreated equally.&nbsp; Simply saying \u201cgood\njob\u201d while poking your head over the cubicle wall isn\u2019t nearly as meaningful as\ntaking a moment to speak genuinely with the employee you\u2019re praising and give\ndetails and specifics, for instance:&nbsp;\n\u201cYou really impressed me at the meeting last week.&nbsp; Those suggestions you made were spectacular\nexamples of outside the box thinking and we need more of that\u2026thank you.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the kind of thing that really makes an employee feel appreciated and note the \u2018thank you\u2019 at the end.\u00a0 That\u2019s critical too.
