Here Are Our 2019 Employee Engagement Predictions

Ever since Millennials have begun to dominate the workplace, employee engagement has been taking on an increasing level of importance. Not that it hasn’t been important all along, it’s just that relatively speaking, it’s something Millennials care even more about than employees of previous generations.

With that in mind, here are some hot trends to keep an eye on in the year ahead:

Employee Engagement Will Continue To Increase In Importance

As we said above, engagement has never been unimportant, but as Millennials continue to be the dominant force in the workplace and as increasing number of Boomers retire, you can expect to see the criticality of employee engagement continue to rise.

If you have any old school managers in your employ who don’t yet see the value in robust employee engagement plans, now is the time to be sure they see the light and are fully on board. If they’re not, they’re going to act as a drag on employee morale and retention, which will hurt your bottom line.

Wellness Programs Will Become More Prominent

We’ve been seeing an increase in the importance of employee wellness programs in recent years, and you can expect to see them gain even more importance in the year ahead.

If you’re looking for a quick, simple way to get ahead of the curve, spend some time and a bit of money to develop a wellness program for your company. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. In fact, it could be something as simple as:

  • Adding healthy snacks to the vending machines in the break room
  • Strategically placing a few water coolers around your office
  • Posting exercises that employees can do from their office chairs on your company’s website in the new Wellness section

And the like. None of these require a significant investment on your part, but your employees will see the changes, see that you’re’ trying, and embrace and appreciate them. Even better, you’re bound to get suggestions for additional improvements on that front.

Engagement Plans And Programs Will Become More Data Driven

As employee engagement programs begin to mature, you’ll see the companies that have been doing it the longest increasingly adopt a more data driven approach.

That’s generally not possible for the first couple of years, but after that, it becomes easier to define specific metrics and more accurately measure the impact of what you’re doing. From there, it becomes easier to ditch the elements that aren’t providing a good return on your investment and double down on the things that are paying the biggest dividends.

This, of course, will have the effect of strengthening those programs and making them even more impactful.

The good news is that if you haven’t developed one yet, and you can find a company whose engagement program you like and are interested in emulating, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. You’ll be able to take advantage of the things they’ve learned and use their program as a template for your own.

While it requires a bit more work, if you can’t find a program you want to emulate, it’s still entirely possible to pull best practices from several different program and create something that’s unique to your company.

One thing’s for sure: Employee engagement is here to stay.
